SUIDE SILENCE ♩ ♬

Suicide Silence is an American extreme metal band from Riverside, california. The group consists of vocalist Mitch Lucker, guitarist Chris Garza and Mark Heylmun, drummer Alex Lopez and bassist Dan Kenny. Formed in 2002, the band has released two full-length studio albums, three EPs, six music videos and have won two awards.

Formation, debut EP and The Cleansing (2002–2008)Suicide Silence were founded in 2002 in Riverside california and were at that time, a side-project of many of the members of other groups. The band performed their first show at a local area within Riverside and at that time, the line-up consisted of the members Chris Garza and Mark Heylmun as guitarists, Mike Bodkins as bassist, Josh Goddard as drummer and two vocalists, Mitch Lucker and Tanner Womack. Shortly after their first performance, Womack was fired from the band and they released their first demo the following year. They released their second demo in 2003. After the replacement of Josh Goddard in 2004, the members took the band more seriously and were no-longer deemed as a side project. They would then advance to record their third and final demo in 2005. Following within 2005, the band released their first public release entitled, Suide Silence which was released in the United Kingdom through Third Degree Records and later re-released through the English label In at the Deep End Records and in the US through SOS record

Two years later, the band signed to Century media and released their debut full-length album The Cleansing The album was recorded with Krissan Duwason, mixed by Tue madsen produced by Jhon Travis and features artwork by Dave Mckean. It debuted at number 94 on the Billboard 2007 selling 7,250 copies the first week, and became one of the best-selling debut albums in Century Media history. With the success of their debut album, Suicide Silence were included to take part in Mayhem Vestifal that took place during the summer of 2008. They toured Europe with Park way Drive and Bury your dead following a successful US tour with the same bands. Also touring with Parkway Drive, A day to remember and The acacia Train in mid 2008 during the time when they were included to perform at Sweat Fest. At this point Suicide Silence were beginning to gain a wide range of fans throughout the world.
In 2008 the band covered the song "Engine No. 9" by Deftones that appeared on their debut album Adrealine Suicide Silence released the cover on their limited edition second EP Green Monster as well as iTunes
Dan Kenny brings more than just bottom end and sonic boom to Suicide Silence’s crushing sound; with his fast playing and on-the-money technical accuracy comes a well thought out, structured bass approach that truly resonates. The band is currently in preproduction for the followup to its hard-hitting Century Media album No Time To Bleed.
How would you characterize your band’s work ethic?
Suicide Silence is a tight-knit group, and we spend a lot of time working together to perfect our music. Once No Time To Bleed was released, we got right back into the studio to work on new songs. To get away from the hectic nature of life, this time around we decided to spend this winter isolated from the world in a rented cabin in Big Bear, California, far away from everyone and everything. This helped us to bond, tighten up our sound and focus on creating new material.

What do you do differently than most bassists to achieve your sound?

I play with a pick, but hold it in a way that creates a popping, scraping sound that is unique.
What are your main influences?
I’m really into old-school metal bands. I grew up listening to a lot of death metal, so most of my influences tend to revolve in that genre: Meshuggah, Pyrexia, Deeds of Flesh, Severed Savior, and Cannibal Corpse, where aggressiveness is mixed with extreme technicality. Although I play primarily with a pick, most of my favorite bassists are fingerstyle players, like Derek Boyer of Suffocation and Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne, who are unique and very stylistic.
What tips or tricks can you offer to aspiring bassists?
Become a hundred percent dedicated and absorb yourself in your instrument. Focus on tone. That’s often overlooked, but it’s extremely important, especially in the studio. I spend a lot of time tweaking my SansAmp to get the exact tone I am looking for. Other tips would be to define your sound by playing with consistency, stay on top of practicing, and keep expanding your horizons musically. —ROB SHIMONSKI

There is little doubt in anyone’s minds that SUICIDE SILENCE are one of theof the new wave of American metal, a statement further validated as the group won the “Best New Talent” Award at the inaugural Revolver Golden Gods Awards, held at Club Nokia in Los Angeles on April 7th, 2009. The group was also hailed as the event’s breakthrough artist by the LA Times, but make no mistake that this extreme juggernaut is not resting on their laurels and are about to take things up a notch with their highly anticipated sophomore release, No Time To Bleed, which was produced by the acclaimed Machine (Lamb of God). This new effort promises to make their debut offering seem like easy listening.
Synonymous to the cult classics such as Metallica’s Kill Em All and Slayer’s Reign In Blood, the voracious No Time To Bleed provides a substantial wake up call to the masses giving today’s youth an outlet to vent their everyday frustrations. SUICIDE SILENCE can identify with their fans and know what struggles they face in today’s society. This new effort showcases a more mature band coming into their own, ultimately paving a new path throughout the metal genre unique all unto itself that can’t be replicated. This is the future of extreme music that is brutal, genuine and simply undeniable.

 Mark Heylmu SUIDE SILENCE
I’m sure it will be. Heavy, brutal, riff-heavy…all the usual pre-album hype these deathcore cats spew these days on their Fakebooks and their Tweeters with their Twilights and their rainbow parties. I’m not the least bit surprised these guys would use an adjective like “heavy,” because listening to their music, you can tell they’re the kind of band that just tries to keep amping up the heaviness, because that’s what makes kids rip each other apart in the pit.
I noticed on  that Australia’s  spoke with guitarist Mark Heylmun of California deathcore masters Suicide Silence and he says on the next record, which they’ve been working on all year in a cabin in the mountains, we’ll be hearing “a bunch of crazy stuff. We’ve got a bunch of new stuff and we’ll be looking to record it early next year.”
Not surprisingly, the new album will be ready in time for summer and Mayhem…just a thought. “It’s just going to be heavy as hell, catchy as hell, [with] good live songs that are fun to play live and with more riffage. We try not to go by the book and do fun stuff we can jam on.”
What does Heylmun think of being tagged “deathcore?” “It is what it is. Whatever you want to call it, it’s just a new thing that somebody thought of. I don’t think anyone [in the band] thinks of it as deathcore, or any other bands other than some younger bands [use it either], it’s just a media label and we’re just bands playing music. We just accept it and do what we want to do anyway. I don’t really get it. The first time I heard anyone say it was at a show a long time ago, like 2005. It was funny.”
Hilarious.

Alex Lopez SUIDE SILENCE
Since I joined Suicide Silence in June of 2007, I can honestly say that it's been a non-stop roller-coaster ride of touring, writing, and more touring. Yes, being in Suicide Silence can be a bitch sometimes, but it's all worth it. Right now I'm in Cleveland, Ohio, watching Nile's crew set up the stage. We went straight into this tour from our European run with Behemoth, and it almost feels like the same tour in this never-ending cycle that keeps us out on the road. After the Nile tour we'll be going to Europe with Parkway Drive and Bury Your Dead. Then later this summer we'll be doing the Rockstar Mayhem Tour with the almighty Slipknot. I'm really excited for that tour, as I've been a big fan of theirs since like '99.

I just got a Tama endorsement and ordered the new B/B Starclassic (birch/babinga) kit. I'm very excited, as I've had my current kit since seventh grade. Aside from Tama, I've got Vic Firth and Sabian endorsements. Needless to say, my new kit will be pretty amazing. All the hard work I've been putting into the band is finally paying off in regards to equipment.
I've been playing drums since I was in the fourth grade, in 1995. I started playing guitar first, but found it very stress-relieving to play drums, so I kind of decided to do it all. I still play guitar and bass whenever I can.
One of the main tips I have for all the young metal drummers out there is that it's not about how fast you are, what brand of drums you have, or what type of pedals you use. In my opinion, it's how much soul and love you put into your instrument when you play. Be unique, but be true. To be an amazing drummer takes years and years of practice and dedication. I know I'm not the world's fastest drummer, and I know my current drum et is ten years old, but that doesn't prevent me from loving what I do behind the drums. When you put your soul and love into the music, you will soon realize that the BPM are irrelevant; what matters is the groove.
